However, Jon has told the “what colour are the seats in Knoxville?” story a few times since that tour. First, it was to Van
Halen as they were supporting Bon Jovi on their 1995 tour and moaned about being the opening act. Jon asked them the question, telling them: “They’re orange. How do I know that? Cause last
time we played there, there was no one in them!” He used the story as a reminder that you have to work through tough times and that the next thing coming might just be the big reward. He also
told the story on the film set of U-571 a couple of years later to young actors since they had to wait in the cold water for a long time due to the film’s many takes on some scenes. A few
months after that motion picture, the arena was renovated and Matthew McConaughey sent Jon a box with some original seats to his home, thanking him for the lesson.
No recording from that night could be found.
