There was
a certain feel of uncertainty floating around since news had spread that, four days prior to this, the band had cancelled their show in Perth due to Tico's wrist injury and it seemed that,
since these were the very early days of internet, it hadn't been known that the Bon Jovi had actually gone on and performed in Brisbane the previous night. With temperatures rising up to 40
degrees Celcius and security being very strict at checking everyone, concert attendees were queued in the burning sun at noon for hours and hours before getting onto the concert site. Once
having entered, the weather changed rapidly. What was at first welcomed as a nice shower to cool off everyone, quickly turned into a huge hail storm which damaged parts of the stage, had
people running for something to hide under, caused a short-circuit in the PA and flooded the pit area right in front of the stage. Via speakers, people were told to go back to their cars to
dry off and change if needed whereas stage workers hurried to see if the show was still to be rescued. At the same time, the fire brigade came in to pump that water out of slight downhill
section right in front of the stage. For hours, it seemed uncertain if the concert was to go underway and the crowd got nervous when the announcement was made that two support acts, "The
Poor" and "Dogstar" were already forced to cancel their sets. But the tides were about to turn. Jimmy Barnes was able to go on and play a shorter opening set and then, after more technical
problems, Bon Jovi finally entered the stage. The recording shows that the sound mix was completely off when they started, but the band was absolutely determined to make up for everything.
During the show, there were multiple sound problems and I actually think that the hail storm might've caused damage to the taper's equipment as well. Before Never Say Goodbye, both drums and
Richie's guitar seemed to be gone which lead Jon to start it on his own and the rest of the band to join once their subsequent instrument was working again. All in all, it seemed like a crazy
night where, against all odds, everyone was able to leave happy in the end!
Some recording from that night (not mine):
